Abstract

Location-Based Services(LBS) are rapidly emerging services in the ubiquitous computing era. While LBS promise efficiency and effectiveness in providing various consumer services, consumers’ use of LBS also raise fundamental privacy issues. The focus of this paper is to investigate consumers’ privacy concerns relating to the use of LBS, and to identify factors that affect consumers’ intention to use LBS. A research model was developed based on TAM(Technology Acceptance Model) to include factors such as perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of LBS. Additional constructs such as consumers’ privacy concerns, trust in business and government were also included in the model to identify the impact of privacy related variables on consumers’ intention to use LBS. Findings showed that consumers are very concerned about their location information privacy in general, and the way companies use consumer information. In testing of the set research model. hypotheses about the impact of consumers’ privacy concern and trust in business as well as perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use on consumers’ intention to use LBS were supported. The hypothesis about the impact of trust in government on consumers’ intention to use LBS was not supported. Discussions with regard to the development of appropriate strategies for the successful consumer privacy protection of ubiquitous society are provided.
