Abstract

An analysis on synchrony in teacher-child interactions Kim, Eon-Kyung (Ewha Womans University Ewha Child Care Center) This study aims to examine the characteristics of teacher-child interactions by investigating the components of synchrony in teacher-child interactions and looking into the tendency of synchrony in accordance with child’s gender and teacher’s work experience. Synchrony means a qualitative interactional style between two persons. The concept includes qualitative features of interactions characterized by reciprocity, shared emotions, and balanced interactional attempts and responses between the two persons. The subjects of this study were 40 4-year-old children and 20 teachers who were in charge of classrooms in kindergarten located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. To look into the interactional synchrony, one-to-one play interaction between teacher and child was observed in three kinds of situations: teaching a board game, building blocks, and free-play. The data was analyzed into reciprocity, sharing of emotion, and balance of mutual initiation and compliance, which are the components of synchrony, to examine the style of teacher-child interactional synchrony in dyad. The results of this study were as follows. The aspects of synchronous interactions assumed that teachers and children mutually interacted and showed interrelationship, but this was not in perfect balance, and the participation was not equal. While interacting, teacher and child mostly shared positive and neutral emotions. The interactions initiating frequency differed so initiation lost balance, but compliance was well balanced. The interactions lasted longer when teacher initiated it than when the child did. But most of the interactions ended after one person was initiating and the other was complying to it, and interactions with two more complies with turnovers were a little. The sharing of positive and neutral emotions in synchrony showed the differences according to the child's gender, and teachers with 3-5 years of work experience did the most synchronous interactions by interacting mutually and showing high quality interrelationship than other teachers with less or more work experience did.
