Abstract
This study was performed to investigate the equity of health care utilization based on injury patients' SES. Target subjects of this study were those who utilized healthcare due to injury using data from Korea Health Panel in 2008 and 2009. In this study, the definition of equity follows that of horizontal equity, which is based on the conception 'equal service for equal need or want'. Income was used as variable representing SES. Medical need(want) was adjusted using age and severity, and severity was used according to operability of injury and diagnosis name. Standardized health care utilization was compared among classes, and equity in health care expenditure according to income was analyzed by using the standardized concentration curve and index. The result of this study is as follows. Health care utilization based on income level for women showed that admission days were a positive concentration index(pro-rich) but inpatient medical expenses were a negative concentration index(pro-poor). The number of outpatient department visits and outpatient medical expenses for men were a positive concentration index(pro-rich). And outpatient medical expenses for women were a positive concentration index(pro-rich). There was the biggest inequality in income level, and the gap was bigger in the outpatient than inpatient. Therefore, it is necessary for lower SES groups to access appropriate level of health care service.
