Abstract

Recently, industrial companies across various fields have actively embraced and utilized AI Chatbot, which is conversational robot equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, to provide consumer consultation services. However, the success of integrating this innovative technology depends on consumer acceptance and resistance. Therefore, this study aims to scrutinize the factors influencing consumers’ intention to use AI Chatbot. Drawing upon Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this research examined factors positively influencing the intention to use AI Chatbot. Additionally, based on Innovation Resistance Model (IRM), we identified factors negatively affecting the intention to use AI Chatbot. Furthermore, this study analyzed whether the factors positively influencing the intention to use AI Chatbot could moderate the impact of factors negatively affecting this intention. The research findings are as follows: First, core variables of UTAUT-performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence-significantly impact the intention to use AI Chatbot. However, the influence of facilitating condition was not confirmed. Second, factors derived from IRM-negative emotions experienced during the process of adopting innovative technology and psychological resistance to the changing consumer consultation methods due to AI Chatbot- were confirmed to negatively influence the intention to use AI Chatbot. Third, while the impact of negative emotions remains unmoderated by any factors, it was confirmed that effort expectancy can moderate the influence of psychological resistance. This multifaceted exploration of factors influencing consumers’ intention to use AI Chatbot is expected to expand research fields related to the diffusion of innovative technology and user resistance. Moreover, providers of customer consultation services using AI Chatbot can devise effective business strategies based on these research to successfully integrate their AI Chatbot systems. Particularly, policymakers in consumer can develop specific measures to address consumer issues arising from the proliferation of AI Chatbot, especially concerning the social exclusion of digitally disadvantaged individuals.
