Abstract

This study examined the social media usage patterns of mothers with infants and toddlers for child-rearing purposes, and investigates the relationship between social media’s positive and negative aspects with maternal parenting stress and efficacy. A survey of 275 mothers, using a questionnaire based on adult social media usage research and tools measuring parenting stress and efficacy, was conducted. Results indicate that mothers use social media for an average of 1.94 hours daily and 5.41 days weekly, primarily for information and convenience. However, over 60% of respondents reported experiencing social comparison and relative deprivation, particularly regarding economic status. While positive aspects of social media showed no significant correlation with parenting stress and parenting efficacy, negative aspects such as social comparison and relative deprivation were strongly associated with both. These results suggest that there is a need to provide accurate parenting information on social media platforms that mothers easily access for child-rearing purposes. Further, they indicate the necessity to analyze not only trends in social media usage but also differences in personal experiences, including the emotions felt by mothers who use these platforms
