Abstract

This study aimed to explore 4- and 5-year-old children’s allocation decisions and reasoning in specific situations. Participants were 58 children from 4- and 5-year-old classes at A kindergarten in Seoul, South Korea. Small group interviews were conducted using allocation episodes developed by the researcher as the research tool. The results of the study are as follows: First, the children preferred equal allocation in situations where conditions were equal. Second, when the merit (effort and result) differed, most of the children still preferred equal allocation. However, some children allocated differently based on merit; this trend became stronger with older children. In addition, as the differences in merit repeated, more children adjusted their allocation decisions to favor differential allocation. Third, when the differences in needs were presented, that is to decide whether to share extra toys with a peer who did not have enough toys, the children’s responses were roughly evenly split. Nevertheless, 5-year-olds were more willing to share their toys with the peer than 4-year-olds. Fourth, more than half of the children still preferred equal allocation in complex situations, though their reasons varied widely. These results reveal that young children have a higher level of reasoning and ability to consider various aspects than previously suggested in earlier literature. The findings also highlighted the need to re-evaluate young children’s capacities and expand existing theoretical frameworks.
