Abstract

As the concept of health has expanded, subjective health status has become increasingly important. Health literacy has been shown to positively influence subjective health, and previous studies have indicated that its determinants vary across the life cycle. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between health literacy and subjective health status by life cycle, and to identify differences in the factors affecting subjective health status by stage. These findings are intended to provide a foundation for developing institutional policies and program approaches to improve health literacy and subjective health. Data were obtained from the 2021 wave of the Korea Health Panel Survey (KHP version 2.1, 2019–2020 annual data), jointly conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs and the National Health Insurance Service. A total of 13,530 participants were analyzed. After controlling for participants’ general characteristics, the results revealed: (1) In older adults, the interaction effect between life cycle and health literacy on subjective health status (AOR = 1.34, p = 0.0224); (2) health literacy did not significantly associated with subjective health status among young and middle-aged adults, but was significant only in older adults; and (3) across all life cycles, exercise, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms were significant predictors of subjective health status. In addition, among older adults, only the “health management” subdomain of health literacy associated with subjective health status (AOR = 1.12, p = 0.0023). These findings suggest that the association between health literacy and subjective health status varies across the life cycle, and that differentiated interventions targeting subdomains of health literacy are particularly necessary for older adults. Furthermore, since exercise, stress, and depressive symptoms consistently influenced subjective health across all life stages, the results provide important evidence for developing activity-based and psychosocial programs to improve health outcomes.
