PRESIDENTIAL NEWS IN SOUTH KOREA: An Analysis of front-page news by Two Major Newspapers 1952-2005

This study has analyzed how two South Korean newspapers, the Dong-a Ilbo and the Chosun Ilbo, have reported the news about the presidency over the past 50 some years. The method was content analysis. This study drew heavily on Elmer Cornwell’s early work on American presidency. The frame of analysis, both theoretical and methodological, was borrowed from Cornwell’s pioneering studies of U.S. newspapers in the 1950s. The result indicates three major trends: first, the relative proportion of the presidential news, vis-à-vis other stories, by these newspapers has continued to increase over time. Second, this trend appears to be closely associated with the processes of democratization in the South Korean society, which began late 1980s. And third, a notable aspect is the upward trend of the amount of critical reporting of presidency with the progress of democratization.
