이 논문의 목적은 요안네스 카시아누스가 갈리아 수도원에 대안으로 제시한 이집트적 가난이해가 무엇이며, 자신의 수도문헌에서 어떻게 해석 및 적용하고 있는가를 밝히는 것이다. 카시아누스의 '철저한 가난'이란 주제가 가지고 있는 중요성을 이해하기 위해서는 그의 수도문헌이 저술되었던 5세기 갈리아와 깊게 영향을 받았던 이집트 수도사들의 가난이해를 먼저 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 우선 카시아누스는 자신의 수도문헌들을 5세기 갈리아 수도사들에게 전하고자 작성했다는 사실을 기억해야 한다. 갈리아 수도사들은 ‘수도원적 가난’이란 부를 포기하는 것이 아니라 다양한 수도원 사업을 위해 적절하게 사용하는 일이라 간주했다. 그들은 가난에 대해서 매우 유연한 입장을 가지고 있었다. 따라서 카시아누스는 갈리아 수도사들이 부를 제대로 포기하지 않았으므로 그들의 영적 진보는 실패하고 말았다고 주장한다. 이어서 카시아누스는 갈리아 수도 문화를 개혁하기 위해서 이집트의 수도원칙들을 소개하려고 한다. 특별히 그가 영향을 받은 안토니우스, 파코미우스, 에바그리우스의 가난이해를 자기만의 방식으로 해석하고 때로는 과장하면서 ‘이집트 수도원의 가난’을 이상화시킨다. 이러한 갈리아와 이집트의 영향을 바탕으로 카시아누스가 전개하는 가난이해는 단순히 이집트의 수도적 가난을 반복하지 않는다. 오히려 독특한 가난이해를 제시한다. 그의 가난이해를 세 가지로 측면으로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 인간본성이 가지고 있는 취약성을 깊이 고민하며 지속적으로 외적 가난을 강조한다. 둘째, 카시아누스 자신의 영성신학에 가난이 차지하는 역할과 비중이 커지고 이런 이유로 에바그리우스의 신학과 차이를 보인다. 셋째, 카시아누스는 예루살렘교회를 이상화하며 가난이해를 정당화하려고 한다.
Abstract
The aim of this article is to examine how John Cassian's concept of Egyptian monastic poverty can be understood through his monastic writings, De institutis and Collatines patrum. In order to understand the significance of John Cassian's radical poverty, Gallic and Egyptian's ascetic views of monastic poverty should be examined. First, we need to be bear in mind that Cassian created his own ascetic corpus to address the circumstances of fifth-century Gallic asceticism. The Gallic monks understood renunciation as the retention of money and its proper use for various monastic works. Their attitude towards radical poverty may be regarded as very flexible. Thus, Cassian attempted to explain how Gallic monks' spiritual progress had been undermined because they did not renounce their possessions. Second, if this is the case, how should the lives of the Gallic monks be modified? The alternative Cassian offers is simple: to regard Egyptian ascetic principles as the only apostolic and authoritative way. Cassian attempts to bring Egyptian monastic poverty (particularly, Antony, Pachomius, and Evagrius) to Gallic monks. However, Cassian intends to exaggerate the Egyptian understanding of poverty. On the basis of these two main contexts, Cassian does not simply and literally repeat Egyptian views of monastic poverty, but creates a unique understanding of poverty. Here we can find the three fundamental aspects of Cassian's monastic poverty: first, the continuous emphasis on external poverty based on human vulnerability; second, the role and place of radical poverty in Cassian's monastic scheme involving virtues attained through the practical stage and the ascetic idea for puritas cordis; third, the connection between Cassian's radical poverty and the ideal poverty of the Apostolic Church.
