Abstract

This study examines the growing perception of online video platforms, such as YouTube, as “news media outlets” amid diversified news consumption. It investigates how this perception is linked to users’ trust structures, including distrust of traditional media and trust gaps between actually consumed news and overall news. A binary logistic regression was performed using data from the 2024 Korea Press Foundation Media Survey among respondents who consumed news via online video platforms. Results show that lower distrust in traditional media and larger trust gaps increase the likelihood of perceiving video platforms as news media, while perceived severity of news reporting problems had no significant effect. These findings suggest that the perception of media legitimacy for video platforms is closely connected to users’ trust dynamics, rather than solely driven by changes in the media environment.
