Abstract
In this paper, The Martyred is examined focusing on the meaning of bilingual and the practice of reading and the context of nationalism missed in the ideological reading of ‘universality’. Language selection is primarily intended for readers with the literacy of the language, aimed at the literary composition, social and cultural horizons in which the reader is located. Richard E. Kim, who is a member of the postwar era, was a bilingual who learned Japanese in a colonial period and learned Hangul writing since liberation. In addition, for Richard E. Kim, literature was a new study learned in English in American institutional education, and his creative horizon was entirely in the history of American literature. At the time of publication, American reading of The Martyred was above the tradition of Western literature. Existentialism of Camus, the meaning of Job’s suffering, which the Western interpretation shows are closely related to the McCarthyism, War Literature and existentialism of the American after the Second World War. On the other hand, Korea’s reading about The Martyred was mostly in the western context or silent, and no active reading was done. When we read The Martyred without prejudice to the interpretation of the United States, we can find the context of the ‘nationalism’. Pastor Shin’s philosophy and rationalization is consistent with Colonel Jang’s anti-communism, war ideology, and nationalism, which is the belief of the writer, even leading to the Innocent. The anti-communism and nationalism of the writer, formed through the concrete experience of colonization, war and division, and studying in America, is an important ideology that supports The Martyred.
