Abstract

This paper aims to study characteristics of Gu-myoung Nam’ Seol (說) and the reality of Jeju in the late Joseon Dynasty from the perspective of those the characteristics. Gu-myoung Nam’ Seol (說) is composed of 10 pieces in total. If those are classified by a sub-genre and a subject matter of Seol(說), they can be divided into two types ; argumentative Seol(說) about Jeju’s natural ecology and allegorical Seol(說) about animals living in Jeju. In argumentative Seol(說), a distinction between truth and false about Jeju's natural ecology is noticeable. Points are developed through a problem posing using a cross-question and a straightforward argument. It is because that there is an intention to wipe out absurd stories through discerning between truth and false about legends and strange stories, not about sharp issues with pros and cons. In allegorical Seol(說), an edification and a guidance about the public morals of Jeju are noticeable. Despite of allegorical Seol(說), there are quite straightforward and accusatory points. It is to admonish people through the direct contrast between animals and humans. The records of Jeju in the Joseon Dynasty have Confucian and Taoistic characteristics simultaneously. Confucian characteristics stand out since the era of King Sukjong. The primary reason for this change is linked with an aid policy to Jeju and the national civil service examinations. The Moksa(governor) and the Pangwan(judge) sent to Jeju at that time are mainly the Literati Bureaucrats. In their records, they emphasized a distinction between truth and false about Jeju to end an internal anxiety from the perspective of government officials’s positions. Gu-myoung Nam’ Seol(說) is an extension of this stance. However, he actively reflected his voice in a distinction between truth and false, embodied it through literary methods, and reflected the reality of Jeju in the records in great detail that could not be found in governmental records. This is the difference between his records and the other records about Jeju.
