초록
Since Ferdinand de Saussure initiated the study of language as a closed and autonomous system of signs, language-oriented theorists have followed his lead and spawned further studies largely centered on the notion that language exists as the synchronic system or langue as an abstraction. Often ignored is a tangible contact and relationship between the sign and the sign-user, and particularly the idealized description of language and the intended use of language in an actual situation. Text, however, is a 'matter,' a fulfilling 'medium,' and an embodied 'speech act' through which we intend to influence and shape the status of 'reality.' With a body of textual substance, we make a specific discursive reality, as we shape clay into a vessel or into a pot. Text is the material instance of a culture through which we query, estimate, and experience our cultural norms and reality. Whereas an instance of the textual phenomenon is subject to a synchronic scrutiny as an impersonal system, it is also the material substance through which we experience and express our lived reality. As a material that writers put their hands on and labor with, text is the result of a close inter-relationship and collaboration between the observer and the observed, and the news reporter and reality. Viewed in this way, text, or textual representation, becomes a highly performative act, through which the news-reporters shape their stance towards the news event and in which a certain aspect of reality is saliently captured and embodied by a particular text type.
