Abstract

Lee SujinThe purpose of this study is to observe the similarities and differences between Alice in Lewis Carroll's Alice books and Lolita in Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita. Nabokov who translated Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in Russian suggested overlapping Alice and his Lolita using Carroll's wordplay.My paper examines the matters of physical growth which two girls are confronted with. Although the worlds in which two girls live are different, they have the same problem how to accept their physical growth. Alice who lives in fantasy plays with the size of her body and overcomes the discomfort of growth by understanding the relations between the self and the other. She can jump the perplexing situation lightly as she jumps across the stream in Looking-Glass Land. But Lolita whose world is actual and industrial can't play with her body or jump the embarrassing situation. The only thing that she can do in the novel as a victim of a male lover is to enter into another trap in order to escape the web of Humbert the Spider.
