Abstract
It was in 1994 that the first article on Asian American literature was published in Korean academic journal. Since then, there has been a considerable increase in terms of both the quantity and quality of Asian American literary studies in Korea over the decades. Despite such a remarkable development for a short period, however very little effort has been made to properly evaluating the achievements of research in Asian American literary scholarship in Korea. To revise the scholarly trend that has neglected in this area, in this paper, I shall focus on the main interests and trends in the development of Asian American literary studies in Korea and discuss their achievements and prospects. This observation will be substantiated by a empirical studies. A reappraisal of the published papers will discover the achievements and restrictions of Asian American literary studies in Korea. Korean scholars have showed an abstruse imbalance of interest and emphasis in their studies of Asian American literature. They have concentrated too much on Korean American literature and Chinese American literature including a few of “stellar writers” such as Maxine Hong Kingston, Chang-rae Lee, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and Nora Okja Keller, namely those lucky few who have adored the public spotlight in recent years. In contrast, Japanese American literature and Filipino American literature, not to mention of Vietnamese American literature, have not been properly studied. What is perhaps even more problematic is that Korean scholars have not done impartiality to the diverse genre and topics of Asian American literature. Now, the most urgent arrangement for Korean scholars is, then, to diversify their study of Asian American literature in terms of ethnicity, genre and topics. Simultaneously, they should try to make more important contributions in the study of Korean American literature, to be rooted it firmly in the context of American literary history.
