Abstract

Eunjoo WooTheresa Hak-Kyung Cha was a performance artist as well as a writer. In both her performances--A BLE WAIL and Awakened in the Mist--and in her book, Dict e, she uses the Korean traditional shamanic motif of mudang. The motif of mudang symbolizes Cha's main themes in her works such as the Freudian concept of "mourning and melancholia," the representation of "dream-thoughts" and "dream-work" at the unconscious level, and the resurrection of forgotten Korean history. In other words, the mudang and the diseuse in her artworks and Dict e conjure up lost Korean history that has been hidden in Korean (American) melancholia, and Cha tries to properly "mourn" the lost, sad, Korean (American) memories in history. Finally, through re-discovering the Korean history, Cha regains the lost self (the identities of Koreans and Korean Americans including Cha) and reconnects "self" and "other" which have been disconnected from each other.
