Abstract

Women Composers and Contemporary Music in Korea Kim HeejeongWhat is feminism in music composition? Answering this question, musicologists and composers do not seem to agree upon what constitutes the femininity in musical works. This study suggests that the attempt to conceptualize the notion of femininity in musical works does not help much in answering the question as to under what conditions women composers develop their musicality and conduct themselves as professional musicians. The purpose of this study is to provide an account of social conditions of Korean women composer and to make a set of suggestions for enhancing the conditions. To do this, first, the factors influencing the social status of women composers are identified. Then the social conditions of Korean women composers are discussed. Finally, suggestions are made for Korean women composers to broaden the opportunities for women composers' professional activities.
