Abstract

This study analyzes the motives for travel, the process of healing, and the act of exploration through literary creation as reflected in Seongyeorok. It examines Byeongwa Yi Hyeong-sang’s perspectives on nature during his journey, his literary exchanges, the treatment and management of illness, and his Confucian thought. In 1708, Yi recorded his journey to Pyeonghae in search of hot springs to cure chronic illness, embedding within Seongyeorok not only his habitual Confucian reflections but also his interactions with contemporaries and the literary works they produced. After bathing in the hot springs at Pyeonghae, Yi composed Tangcheon Mokyokbang(湯泉沐浴方), in which he documented the appropriate timing and effective methods of bathing, the therapeutic efficacy and origin of the hot springs, and the precautions to be observed. This reveals him not merely as a recorder of personal experience, but as a Confucian scholar intent on encompassing practical wisdom and even broader moral instruction. Furthermore, his records of interaction with local literati highlight that his travel took place within the framework of contemporary social relations. Seongyeorok preserves a twenty-four-day itinerary in which Yi composed poems almost daily, inscribed in the format of a diary, with explanatory notes on poetic forms and their conventions. Among these works are eight poems written in response to Seo Geo-jeong’s(徐居正) Eight Songs of Pyeonghae(平海八詠). Through the practice of responding in rhyme(chaun, 次韻), Yi simultaneously embraced the imagery of earlier writers and infused it with his own experiential and realistic reflections. This study thus identifies Seongyeorok as a record of Yi Hyeong-sang’s journey to Pyeonghae undertaken for the recovery of health, a process of experiencing nature, engaging with fellow literati, and enacting Confucian ideals of life, and as the literary outcome in which his thought and sensibility were sublimated into poetry.
