Abstract
Musical anthropology is to study the cultural characteristics of a social group through music as a culture. It has to conduct field research and to provide musical ethnography in order to understand the cultural structure of the given social group. Among many special tools of musical anthropology, musical transcription and notation is the most distinctive trait which differentiates it from other social sciences. Therefore, many musical anthropologists emphasize the importance of transcription and notation. In this paper, I explore the development of various transcription and notation technique in musical anthropology. Since Carl Stumpf's assert on the importance of transcription and notation techniques in 1886, various techniques have developed in order to understand certain musical character of a given social group in accordance with the scholars who study with the social group. The early musicologists tend to depend upon the Western staff notation which is the most widely used method still in these days. Some musical anthropologists have developed their own method which illustrates the points which the Western staff notation cannot describe well enough. Others even made mechanical and automatic transcription devices in order to measure the musical traits scientifically. It is important to device his/her own method which can faithfully describe the musical traits of one's field music.
