초록
In a general matrix of power between the rulers and the ruled in Toni Morrison’s Beloved, Schoolteacher exercised power upon Sethe by enforcing Sethe’s mode of being as half human and half animal, which naturally denies Sethe’s right as a mother to breastfeed her children. Schoolteacher’s power enforcement is carried out in three stages abiding by Schoolteacher’s knowledge of Sethe as a Black slave which has both human and animal characteristics: categorization of Sethe as half human and half animal, rape of her milk, and attempt to arrest her and her children. In response, Sethe carries out actions of resistance based on the belief that the knowledge enforced upon her by Schoolteacher must not adjust to herself and her children. Ironically, at the root of extended power relations with her children, Sethe transforms herself into another ruler and exercises her power of motherhood upon her children, which consequently alienates her outside the power matrix. Sethe’s actions of resistance extends her stance from the ruled into the ruler within the power relationship and when facing another resistance by the ruled, her own children, Sethe fails to justify destruction of the power matrix between Schoolteacher and herself.
