Abstract
To be addicted to the substances such as a stimulant is a complex disease process of the brain that results from recurring drug intoxication and is modulated by genetic, developmental, experiential, and environmental factors. Furthermore, the fact that the comorbidity rates in stimulant abusers are high makes the matters more complicated. As a result, at present there is no evidence supporting the clinical use of psychotropic medications such as dopamine agonists, antidepressants and carbamazepine in the treatment of stimulant abuse. And given the high rate of dropouts in this population, clinicians should consider adding psychotherapeutic measures aiming to keep patients in treatment. Although the previous medication trials show no promising result, it would be meaningful to review the articles for the further investigations.
