본 연구에서는 발굴이나 지표조사를 통해 알려진 남한지역 신석기시대 유적의 공간분석을 통하여 유적의 분포 패턴과 군집을 파악하고 그 문화적 의미를 고찰하였다. 신석기시대 유적의 공간상분포가 균일하지 않고 특정 지역에 밀집되어 있다는 사실은 신석기시대 연구 초기부터 주목된 바있다. 유적의 비균일적 분포는 환경적 요인과 동시에 사회적 요인에서 비롯되었을 것이다. 제주도와 도서 지역을 제외한 남한지역에서 보고된 665개소의 신석기시대 유적의 분포를 퍼콜레이션(Percolation) 기법으로 군집분석한 결과, 관찰 범위상의 차이에 따라 다수의 소군집과 소수의 대군집으로 나눌 수 있었다. 하나의 대군집은 3~5개의 소군집으로 구성되어 있다. 소군집들은 시기적인 차이를 가지고 형성된 것으로 판단되는데, 이는 인구 확산에 단⋅장거리 이동이 병행되었고확산의 중핵지역이 존재했기 때문으로 해석할 수 있다. 인구가 급증했던 3500 BC를 전후한 시기에는 개별 지역군들이 광범위한 사회연결망으로 통합되었을 것이며, 이런 연결망은 여러 개별 유적들이 소군집으로, 다시 여러 개의 소군집들이 대군집으로 연결되는 중첩적 구성을 가졌을 것이다. 한편 전남, 경북, 강원 영서 일부 지역에는 가시적인 지역군이 형성되지 않는데, 이들 지역은사회환경적 요인으로 인해 신석기시대 전시기에 걸쳐 인구밀도가 매주 낮은 지역이었기 때문으로판단된다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the spatial patterns and clustering of Neolithic sites in South Korea through spatial analysis of sites identified via excavations and surface surveys, while also examining their cultural significance. The uneven spatial distribution of Neolithic sites, with a tendency to cluster in specific regions, has been noted since the early stages of Neolithic research. This non-uniform distribution is likely attributable to both environmental and social factors. Using the percolation method to analyze the clustering of 665 Neolithic sites reported in South Korea (excluding Jeju Island and other islands), the study identified that the sites can be categorized into multiple small clusters and a few large clusters, depending on the range of observation. A single large cluster is composed of 3 to 5 small clusters. These small clusters appear to have formed at different times, suggesting that both short- and long-distance population movements occurred and that there were core areas of population diffusion. Around 3500 BC, when the population experienced rapid growth, individual regional groups are thought to have been integrated into extensive social networks. These networks likely had a nested structure, where individual sites formed small clusters, and multiple small clusters interconnected to form large clusters. On the other hand, no significant regional clusters were formed in parts of Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do, which were likely low-density areas throughout the Neolithic period due to social and environmental factors.
