Abstract

Hollywood Western and Chicano Western Chun, Ki Sun This article pursues the relation between Hollywood Western and Chicano Western. First of all, it describes a short history about chicanos, then makes an analysis the Chicano's image through a history of Hollywood Western. Also it reads into a meaning and various types of Chicano Western, the subgenre in film. The Chicano Western has changed the meaning variously by correspondence with Hollywood Western. The Chicano Western that was defined by Fregoso was not the concept of making film but the metaphorical expression of critical act about Chicanism that was reflected in Hollywood Western. In 1980's the semi-western that was produced in the territory of independence film was a real documentary film and it was evaluated by means of experimental work that broke up the sight sticked to major Hollywood Western at that time. Robert Rodríguez, a reputed film director, shows a specific combination of emigrants in the States through his works. The Chicano Western of Rodríguez is a full-length movie that reflects the entertainingness of western as well. Out of all ideologies, the plots and characters of Hollywood Western add a cultural emotion of Chicanism through his movies. Viewing from a concept of pure genre, his two films, El mariach and Desperado, are real Chicano Westerns. In the process of extension, from a low-budget picture El mariach to a major picture Desperado, we can read out the change of a specific combination that the present masses aim.
