Abstract

The introduction of Western culture into Africa during the colonial period caused drastic socio-cultural changes in the continent. African people had to experience the cultural clash between the West and Africa. In the wake of the African independence movements of the 1950s and 1960s, African writers dealt with the theme of cultural clash in their fictional works. The objective of this study is to explore the theme of cultural clash articulated in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s The River Between. These two novels which are considered representative anti-colonial texts describe the effect of Western culture in the Ibo and the Gikuyu societies. Both of the writers strive to portray the pre-colonial African society as an organic whole by pointing out that the Ibo and Gikuyu societies had been maintained by their own institutions, religions and customs. The advent of colonialism is depicted as a disruption of the natural order of things in both of the novels. The main characters, Okonkwo and Waiyaki, attempt to rectify the disorder brought by colonialism, but their tragic ending implies the embattled situation of African traditional culture under colonialism.
