『새벽부인』의 모티프에 대한 상징성 연구

Abstract

Along with Federico Garcia Lorca, Alejandro Casona is one of the most widely known Spanish writers in the 20th century. But many assessments of him were negative. Because by writing works with mysterious, fantastic and poetic aspects, he avoided the social and political problems of the Franco’s dictatorship in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. The criticism that he wrote the works that instilled the beautiful and romantic fantasy in people and therefore closed the eyes against the oppression and injustice of the society under harsh dictatorships, can seem valid. But with the entry into the postmodern era, politics and sociality are no longer important factors in the literatures or arts. So it is necessary to reevaluate Casona’s works. Especially the poetic elements and aspects of fantasy embodied in his work are quite important in order to understand and evaluate. His works are mainly shown as symbols through various motifs, with poetic elements and fantasy. Thus this study investigates the symbolism of the motifs in the Lady of the Dawn, considered Alejandro Casona’s most representative work. Using motifs containing symbolism, Casona not only builds a more profound world of life and death, but also a criticism of society at the time and also conveys hope of overcoming it.
