Abstract

In the western intellectual history, the dichotomy of mind and the body has situated for a long time the body in the place of the other-object. Since the discovery of the modern self, the body has been regarded as an object of the temperance and the oppression, or as an obstacle to the true perception. But the postmodern philosophy, which pays attention to the problems of the human desire and instinct, treats the body as an object of the various discourse. The body as an object of study has a long history. The thoughts of the empiricism and the materialism in the 18th century lift the body, neglected until then, to the surface. Diderot develops the biological and atheistic materialism in the various texts. This study examines the meaning of the body and the efforts to integrate the body into writing as well as the relationships body-body, body-world through his texts. By proclaiming the materiality of the soul, Diderot overcomes the dichotomous confrontation mind-body. He reveals the body as the subject of sensations, thoughts, desires, and the active body radiating the social meaning. Diderot defines the woman and the man as equal universal entities and destroys the biological superiority of the man. He accuses the social system that oppresses woman’s sexual reality, and declares the rights of the body by showing that the woman, like the man, has the physical desires. Diderot fills the text with the various literary expressions rather than philosophically systematizing the thoughts about the body. Diderot’s text integrates the sounds, the shouts, and the gestures into the domain of the meaning, and conveys the body language visually and generally through the pantomimes. By revealing the productive power of the body as a dynamic complex of thought, sense, desire, negotiation and reaction, Diderot’s text shows that the ‘rehabilitation of the body’ began already in the 18th century.
