Abstract
In the revenge of the woman in Lope’s play, the subject is not a woman. In Spanish society at that time, the chastity of a woman was a matter of honor for her husband, who owned her, and Lope faithfully reflected these values in his play. In fact, in Lope’s Peribáñez y el comendador de Ocaña, the husband of Casilda himself kills a comendador who violated his wife’s chastity. And in El mejor alcalde, el rey, the king becomes the subject of problem solving, and in Fuente Ovejuna, the people are joined by a woman who has lost her chastity, but there is a prevailing perception that her chastity is a matter of her husband or father. On the other hand, the revenge of the woman depicted in Tirso’s play is in a different way. In Tirso’s play, the woman whose honor is trampled becomes the subject of revenge. On the one hand, through elaborate ploys, such as in La Villana de Vallecas and Don Gil de las calzas verdes, the woman realizes a delightful revenge. On the other hand, the woman can also take revenge on the man who defamed her with powerful force that surpasses men, as in La Gallega Mari-Hernández. Although the same issue of female chastity and revenge has been addressed, the difference in perception between Lope and Tirso can be said to be obvious.
