체홉 문학에서 고독의 주제는 개인의 내면적 입장과 사회적 환경이라는 측면에서 고찰되 었다. 작가에게 고독은 매우 익숙하고 중요한 개념이다. 그의 자전적 삶 자체가 고독의 연속 이었을 뿐 아니라 초기부터 후기까지의 그의 창작세계를 관통하고 있는 주제 중 하나가 바로 고독이기 때문이다. 자신의 불행을 누구에게도 말할 수 없어 말에게 넋두리하는 마부와 높은 성직으로 인해 자기 아들을 인간적으로 대할 수 없는 노모, 계층적 차이로 인해 타인의 입장 을 이해하지 못하는 의사 등 이러한 인물은 체홉의 특정 작품에만 존재하는 고독한 인간상이 아니다. 그의 등장인물들 그 누구도 고독의 요소를 공유하지 않는 인물은 없다. 『지루한 이 야기』의 주인공 니콜라이 스테파노비치는 죽음과 육체적 변화를 경험하게 됨으로써 자신의 실존적 본질과 그것을 둘러싼 고독을 깨닫게 된다. 그의 세계관은 개성을 표현하기 위해 과학 을 통한 자아와 본성의 통제, 그리고 타자에 대한 판단 중지가 그 핵심이다. 자신의 이러한 오랜 삶의 태도로 인해 스스로 고립을 선택하여 살았고, 그 결과는 이제 소통할 능력조차 없 는 고독한 실존적 인물로의 전락이다. 니콜라이 스테파노비치는 이 작품의 이전과 이후 작품 들에 등장하는 체홉의 고독한 인물들을 이어주는 연결고리의 의미와 역할을 한다.
Abstract
In Chekhov’s literature, the theme of solitude was considered in terms of the individual’s inner position and social environment. Solitude is a very familiar and important concept to the author. Not only was his autobiographical life itself a series of solitude, but solitude was one of the themes that permeated his creative world from the beginning to the end. A coachman who complains to his horse because he cannot tell anyone about his misfortune, an old mother who cannot treat her son humanely due to her high priesthood, and a doctor who cannot understand the positions of others due to class differences. This character is not a lonely human figure that exists only in certain works of Chekhov. None of his characters share the element of loneliness. Nikolai Stepanovich, the main character of A Dreary Story, experiences death and physical change and comes to realize his existential essence and the loneliness surrounding it. The core of his worldview is controlling the ego and nature through science in order to express individuality, and stopping judgment on others. Due to his long-standing attitude toward life, he chose to live in isolation, and the result is that he is now reduced to a lonely existential figure who does not even have the ability to communicate. Nikolai Stepanovich plays the role and meaning of a link connecting Chekhov’s lonely characters that appear in works before and after this work.
