인문학 텍스트로서 볼테르의 『캉디드』 고찰

현재 국내 대학들이 선정한 권장도서들은 우리가 반드시 읽어야 할 훌륭한 고전들, 또는 현대의 명저들로 잘 구성된 것으로 보인다. 그러나 국내 대학들의 권장도서 목록에서 볼테르 의 작품은 찾아보기가 힘들다. 프랑스 대혁명이 일어난 18세기는 볼테르의 세기라 해도 과언 이 아닐 만큼 볼테르가 차지하는 비중은 루소와 몽테스키외를 능가할 뿐만 아니라, 오늘날까 지 프랑스 지식인의 표상으로 손꼽히는 문인이자 철학자로서 그의 삶과 작품은 실제 인문교 육에도 아주 좋은 전범이 될 수 있다. 더욱이 그의 대표작 『캉디드 또는 낙관주의』는 쉽고 재미있게 읽히는 철학 콩트로서 고전이 지루하고 어렵다는 편견을 깰 수 있으며, 인문학의 본령인 문학, 역사, 철학은 물론 과학과 종교 등 다양한 분야를 얘기할 수 있기 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 이 작품을 텍스트로 삼아 볼테르의 행동하는 철학, 세상의 악, 인간의 행복에 관 한 주제로 크게 나누어 살펴보고, 정의, 자유, 행복, 관용을 추구하는 그의 사상이 지닌 혁신 성, 그리고 시대와 공간을 뛰어넘어 사유의 장을 제시하는 인문학 텍스트로서의 중요성을 짚 어보았다.
Abstract
The recommended books currently selected by domestic universities seem to be well-organized with excellent classics or modern masterpieces that we must read. However, it is difficult to find Voltaire's works on the recommended book lists of domestic universities. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the 18th century, when the French Revolution took place, was the century of Voltaire, and Voltaire's importance surpassed Rousseau and Montesquieu. Furthermore, as a man of letters and a philosopher who is still considered a symbol of French intellectuals to this day, his life and works can be a very good example for actual humanities education. Furthermore, his representative work, Candide or Optimism, is an easy and fun philosophical comedy that can break the prejudice that classics are boring and difficult, and it can talk about various fields such as literature, history, philosophy, science, and religion, which are the essence of the humanities. In this paper, we examine this work as a text, dividing it into themes of Voltaire's philosophy of action, the evil of the world, and human happiness, and examine the innovativeness of his ideas in pursuit of justice, freedom, happiness, and tolerance, as well as its importance as a humanities text that presents a space for thought that transcends time and space.
