Abstract
This paper focuses on the fact that family relationships are determined by how family members view each other in The Idiot. Whether they see each other as economic competitors or as spiritual ties determines the character of that family group. In particular, in the Rogozhin family, which represents materialism, the coexistence of different types of family relationships centered around the son and the mother is observed. Rogozhin, who regards his family as a rivalry and denies the blood family relationship, regards his living mother as no different than a dead person. The mother, who is abused by her husband and son, appears as a thoroughly materialized being in the house. On the other hand, the mother forms a non-blood family relationship with Myshkin and Nastasia. Nastasia’s deep empathy upon witnessing her mother’s suffering becomes a turning point that changes the rest of her life. Nastasia, who identifies with her mother, takes on the role as her protector. Nastasia’s latent maternal qualities are first revealed, and the maternal aspect of her mother, which has been suppressed by her son, is revived. Meanwhile, the change in Rogozhin’s consciousness observed in the three-way relationship between Rogozhin, Rogozhin’s mother, and Nastasia partially explains his motive for committing the murder.
