Abstract
The historical assessment of Jesuit activities in Latin America during the colonial period tends to be highly controversial. In this regard, some value positively the fact that Jesuits have established a settlement for indigenous people called “Reducción” in order to protect them from the forced labor of the Spanish encomenderos and that evangelizing activities have also been carried out under a peaceful strategy called “inculturation”, in which traditional indigenous culture was respected. Nevertheless, others do not stop criticizing that the Jesuits pursued their interests and benefits through absolute control over indigenous peoples. These contrary perceptions could be attributed mostly to the difference in “historical interpretation”, which has been realized from the contemporary perspective. That is to say, some contemporary critics tend to judge the history of the Latin American Jesuits during the colonial period with its specific ideological intentions almost without objectively considering the social and historical context of the time. In this research, it is intended to temporarily suspend the evaluation of either side. Instead, the activities of the Latin American Jesuits will be analyzed considering the specific situations of that time. In particular, the logical consistency of the existing evaluations will be reviewed by re-examining the historical facts of the “Reducción”−the most controversial issue related to the Compañía de Jesús−emphasizing the Jesuit chronicles of the time. Likewise, the study objective will be the “Reducciones” located in the Jesuit Province of Paraguay during the 17th and 18th centuries. The foregoing given that this area was not only the cradle of the Jesuit “Reducción”, but also had an incomparable success with other regions such as New Spain (Mexico) or New France, which caused later controversies−whether it was an ‘utopian model of communism’ or a ‘theocratic capitalist model’. As is known, the Jesuit “Reducción” in Latin America is a traditional and universal topic in foreign academic circles, and the research achievements have been constantly accumulated; however, there are still not many in Korea. Therefore, in order to contribute to the study of the matter, throughout the present work the existing contradictory opinions shall be analyzed from a neutral point of view and this subject shall be exposed to Korean academic circle in order to attract its interest.
