프랑수아 모리악의 작품 속 ‘나와 너’의 관계 연구

본 논문은 작가 프랑수아 모리악의 작품 속 인간과 관계의 문제를 철학자 마르틴 부버의 이론을 통해 분석하고 조명해 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 20세기 프랑스를 대표하는 기독교 계열의 작가였던 모리악은 특히 타자와의 관계에 집중했다. “인간이 어떻게 다른 사람을 대하 는가?”라는 질문은 그의 문학과 저널리스트로서의 저술 활동 전체를 관통한다. <마태복음>에 나오는 “그에게서 나를 보라”는 예수의 가르침은 모리악이 남긴 작품들과 신문 칼럼들, 인터 뷰와 강연들에 반복적으로 등장한다. 모리악의 인물들은 “사랑의 사막”에서 벗어나기 위해 몸부림친다. 그것은 곧 타자와의 올바른 관계를 정립하기 위한 노력이다. 그리고 이 노력은 ‘나-그것’의 관계에서 ‘나-너’의 관계로, 나아가 ‘영원한 너’와의 만남으로 나아가는 과정과 유사하다. 부버가 『나와 너』에서 보여준 각각의 관계 유형의 특징들은 모리악의 작품을 보 다 풍성하게 분석할 수 있도록 도와줄 것이며, 모리악 연구의 지평을 보다 넓혀 나가는 데도 도움이 될 것이다. 고통받는 타자의 모습에서 신의 얼굴을 대면할 수 있다는 모리악의 사상은 하시디즘에 기반한 부버의 사상과 ‘나와 너’의 대화를 이룰 수 있을 것이다. 나아가 모리악의 기독교적 관점에서 우리는 부버의 ‘나-너’ 관계를 보편적 타자에게로 확장 시킬 수 있는 가능 성도 찾아볼 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to analyze and illuminate the issues of humanity and relationships in the works of François Mauriac through the theories of philosopher Martin Buber. A leading Christian writer in 20th-century France, Mauriac was particularly focused on the relationship with the Other. The question “How do humans treat other humans?” runs through his entire literary and journalistic career. Jesus' teaching in the Gospel of Matthew, “Look from him to me,” is a recurring theme in Mauriac’s works. Mauriac’s characters struggle to escape the “desert of love.” It’s about trying to establish the right relationship with others. And this endeavor is similar to the process of moving from an ‘I-It’ relationship to an ‘I-Thou’ relationship. The ‘I-Thou’ relationship is connected to the encounter with the ‘Eternal Thou’. Buber's characterization of each type of relationship will enrich the analysis of Mauriac’s work. The idea that we can see the face of God in the form of the suffering other could be in dialog with Buber’s Hassidic-based ideas. Furthermore, from Mauriac’s Christian perspective, we can see the possibility of extending Buber’s “I-Thou” relationship to the universal solidarity.
