셰익스피어의 작품에는 성경의 구절, 플롯, 이미저리 등이 풍부하게 녹아 있어서 성경에 대한 지식은 셰익스피어를 이해하는 데 필수적인 요소라 할 수 있다. 『리어왕』은 제목이나 등장인물 등을 직접 성경에서 따온 요소는 없지만, 작품의 주제나 플롯 구조 등에서 구약성서 의 「욥기」와 닮은 점이 많다. 여러 비평가가 「욥기」와 『리어왕』의 유사성을 언급하지 만, 단편적 언급에 머물거나 『리어왕』에서 여러 성경 구절을 찾아내는 데에 머물렀다. 본 논문은 「욥기」와 『리어왕』이 구체적으로 어떤 점에서 연관성을 가지며 주제 면에서 유 사하게 읽어낼 수 있는지 탐색하였다. 「욥기」와 『리어왕』은 전통적 가치가 도전받는 전 환기 사회의 갈등과 위기를 보여준다. 또한 전환기 시대의 인간이 부당하게 주어졌다고 생각 되는 고통과 시련에 대한 대응 방식으로 인내를 제시한다. 또한 「욥기」와 『리어왕』은 주인공의 운명에 있어 유사하게 U자형 전개 구조를 가진다. 욥과 리어왕은 사회적으로 높은 지위에 있고 존경받는 인물이었지만 순식간에 모두를 잃고 가장 비참한 상황으로 전락한다. 하지만 그들은 결국 잘못을 뉘우치고 회개하여 구원받는다. 『리어왕』은 주인공의 죽음으로 끝나기 때문에 표면적으로 보면 U자 형태의 운명을 완성하지 못한 듯하지만, 리어왕은 마지 막에 막내딸이 살아 있다고 생각하면서 죽고, 또한 당시 80세가 넘은 노인의 죽음은 자연사에 가까워 단순 비극으로 보기 힘들다.
Abstract
The Book of Job in the Old Testament and Shakespeare’s King Lear portray the social conflicts and crises of transitional periods in which traditional values are challenged. They also explore the human experience of suffering and hardship, particularly the perception of suffering as unjustly inflicted, and suggest patience as a means of wisdom in navigating such trials. Moreover, King Lear and the Book of Job share a structurally analogous plot: both Job and King Lear, initially figures of high social standing and respect, experience a sudden and complete downfall, descending into profound despair. However, each ultimately undergoes a process of repentance and redemption. While King Lear concludes with the protagonist’s death, seemingly disrupting the conventional U-shaped trajectory of downfall and restoration, Lear, an aging king over eighty, finds solace in his final moments as he embraces his youngest daughter, who appears to be alive. Thus, the play resists a straightforward classification as a conventional tragedy.
