Suicide is a major public health concern in Korean military services. For establishment of effective suicide prevention program, it is essential to identify the risk factors of suicide and suicide-related behaviors specific to military population. Previous studies have reported that several socio-demographic factors, psychiatric disorders, psychological factors, stressful and traumatic experiences, past history of suicide-related behaviors, physical illnesses including traumatic brain injuries and other military-specific factors are closely associated with the risk of suicide among military personnel. Present article is aimed to comprehensively review those studies, and to make a proposal for preventing suicide to military physicians, officers and gatekeepers in a wide range of area.
