본 논문은 포의 「소용돌이 속으로의 추락」을 당시 새로운 매체가 등장하는 과도기적 시 대상황과 결부시켜 해석하고자 한다. 이때 마셜 맥루언의 매체이론적 관점을 적용해 포의 단 편소설에 나타나는 매체전환기적 단상들을 파악할 것이다. 맥루언은 오늘날 급변하는 사회에 서 매체가 일으키는 소용돌이 같은 현상에 대해 포의 단편소설 속 뱃사람처럼 탐구하는 태도 가 필요하다는 점을 강조하면서 이 소설을 오늘날 전자매체 시대의 동시대인들을 위한 지침 서로 평가한다. 맥루언의 매체이론은 당대의 매체전환기적 상황에 대한 포의 단상들을 추론 하는 데에 유용하게 적용될 수 있다. 특히 작품 속에 등장하는 휴대용 시계는 당시 산업혁명 기에 등장한 기술혁신의 산물이다. 맥루언적 의미에서 시계는 인간의 시간 감각을 확장하는 매체인데, 소설 속 ‘시계’는 주인공 뱃사람이 매체전환기적 시대를 살고 있음을 암시하는 동 시에 무엇인가를 가능하게 하면서 무엇인가를 차단하는 매체의 양가성을 입증한다. 또한 매 체이론적 관점에서 포의 소설 주인공인 뱃사람은 기존 구술문화에서 벗어나 새로운 문자문화 로 넘어가는 과도기적 상황을 겪고 있는 매체전환기의 인물이기도 하다. 결론적으로 매체이 론적 관점에서 포의 단편소설은 양가적인 매체 및 매체전환기적 상황에 부합한 인식의 중요 성을 성찰하는 계기를 마련한다.
Abstract
This essay interprets Poe’s A Descent into the Maelström within the context of a transitional age marked by the emergence of new media. The Interpretation employs Marshall McLuhan’s media theory to explore Poe’s literary reflections on media change as expressed in his short story. McLuhan emphasizes the necessity for a studious attitude, akin to that of the sailor in Poe’s narrative, when confronting the vortex-like phenomena produced by media in today’s rapidly evolving society. He regards this short story as a guide for action for contemporaries navigating the age of electronic media. The protagonist, the sailor, symbolizes a character undergoing a transition from an old medium to a new one, thereby embodying the demands of the times during this media transition period. Consequently, Poe’s short story can be reinterpreted in the context of media change to provide critical insight into today's media landscape.
