Abstract

This paper has an intention to explain the meaning of Gamyeongo through the examination of the narrative structure of this novel. This novel has a dual structure composed of an extradiegetic and intradiegetics. The different bodies of narration in the two different narrative levels are closely related with each other through the same structure of the pain and the salvation searching the identity of characters. The symmetrical arrangement of a dance drama and the previous existence of Min show the perspective about the world after Korean War. The endeavor to find the identity of Min is frustrated by the experience of the war, the extreme violence. It means it's possible to find the true identity only in the world of spirit, not in the real world.
