Abstract

This paper aims to inquire into traditionalism in Lee, Tae-Jun minutely through his essay and short story. His traditionalism was not plain return to the past or blind recovery of tradition. His classicism was mostly strategic and contained critique of colonial modernity behind. From this point, we can consider his traditionalism as a basis of aesthetic modernity in contradistinction to social and historical modernity. Otherwise, it is probable that this idea restore modernity as dichotomy of binary opposition. Also, It is apprehended that this idea neglect possibility of reflection and renewal in social and historical modernity. The concept of aesthetic modernity is not necessarily confronted with social modernity, but it is duplicated and confused. Therefore aesthetic modernity must be discussed in company with social and historical modernity. In this way, the deep meaning of traditionalism in Lee, Tae-Jun comes to light only if it is examined correlated to modernity. His traditionalism was very meaningful in history of korean spirit under the Japanese colonial rule. The goal of his classicism was to find tradition that can renovate and negotiate with the modern. It was a methodological grope for overcoming distorted colonial modernity. A problem to be solved is a study on traditionalism of all his works including his novels.
