Abstract
The positive explanation about the dominant emotion of Baek-Suk's poetry has not been achieved as yet. Taking notice of this problem, this study understood the dominant emotion of Baek-Suk's poetry as 'sorrow', and made a full discussion of its meaning. First of all, I have investigated the 'sorrow' of poems which were listed in Saseum(deer). In the first chapter of this, 'sorrow' was an element of 'the world of grand alliance'. But collapsing of this comunity, 'sorrow' became an alien substance. For this reason, 'sorrow' focused on subject itself in Baek-Suk's poems after Saseum. Before everything, Baek-Suk's poems organized genealogy of 'sorrow' which linked up with blood relation and nation. 'Sorrow' was contextualized in history. With lasting historicity which surpasses individual showing itself, 'sorrow' did not remain as the negative. 'Sorrow' made an historical subject testify historical reality. However, these testimony can not cross the barrier of colonial actualities. So it comes natural that 'sorrow' did not be settled in these poems. Then the subject of Baek-Suk's poems carried out introspection. The 'sorrow' interlocked with introspection exalted subject. Going through the process of subject's honest meeting 'sorrow', it did not remain as the negative which lied on his mind any more. For, at any rate, 'sorrow' should be overcome or tamed. Baek-Suk's poetry showed the process that subject internalized and overcame 'sorrow'. Through the process, 'the Dahurian buckthorn' which subject met with is a prominent emblem of piety for life and a sublime individual arising from it. And this leap of speculation can be called 'self-erection of modern subject'.
