Abstract

This paper explores annotation errors and mistranslation of Yi Sang’s Japanese poems. Yi’s Japanese poems were translated into Korean and released as a literary text posthumously. Since then, annotations and interpretations have been attached to the texts. In comparison with the Japanese source text, however, many mistranslation and annotation errors can be found in Korean translated versions. In addition, the Korean translations have interpretative problems, such as arbitrariness and difficulties in the interpretations. In other words, the difficulty in understanding Yi’s literature might have been attributed not only to the texts per se, but to the mistranslation or annotation errors. Hence, this study examines the problems on the basis of understandings of Japanese linguistics/Japanese studies. First, the annotation process in translation, where the errors arise, are reviewed in chronological order. Next, frequent annotation errors and mistranslation are presented by category. Through the accumulation of these tasks, Yi’s poetry in translation will attain readability. This study has significance, in that it suggests a possibility that the difficulties of understanding Yi’s literary texts can be resolved through the perspective of Japanese linguistics/Japanese studies in domestic academia.
