Abstract

A Study on the Consciousness of Language and Literacy of Man-Sik Chae and the Narrative Strategy of First Person Novels at the Age of Liberation This study is aimed at researching the recognition of language and literacy of a famous writer, Man-Sik Chae and examining the relativity of a linguistic sense of novels at the age of 1945 Liberation. This thesis investigated how his consciousness of language and literacy was reflected in his novels, especially 「Yeokro」(1946. 6),「Sinner of a nation」(1948. 11), 「Sunset」(1948). These works are the autobiographical novels written with the first person perspective at the age of liberation. Man-Sik Chae agreed with the spelling system of Hangeul, but displeased with it because of his style in actuality. He was always conscious of the readers, so he pursued easy writing style for readers to read and understand. Man-Sik Chae wrote these autobiographical novels as an excuse for himself. He explained in autobiographical novels that his conversion was for the survival of his large family. Through these novels, he wanted to show his real intention. He criticized the reality of the age of liberation in a state of disorder. He endeavored to make sharp observations of the contemporary social condition. His confession literature was based on his consciousness of language and literacy.
