Abstract
This research originates in the statement that the background of the traditional Vietnamese drama “Quan âm Thi Kinh” and the hometown of its protagonist is Kao.li (Goryeo). The epic structure of the suffering of the female protagonist of “Quan âm Thi Kinh” and its aesthetic characteristic of overcoming tragic emotion by comicality are aspects it has in common with Korean epic folksongs. The characteristic of “Quan âm Thi Kinh,” which quarantines the sorrowful woman’s fate by means of satire, thus forming an aesthetic of comicality, has an originality that distinguishes it from the comicality of other works. The comic figures appearing in traditional Vietnamese drama, including “Quan âm Thi Kinh,” in terms of their role models, and means of embodying the aesthetic of comicality, are all exactly the same as the character Malttugi in Korean masked dance dramas (talchum). In the past Korea and Vietnam were far more advanced than we think nowadays in terms of their cultural communication and close relationship of mutual influence.
