김훈의 소설에 나타난 사랑의 의미, 특히 사랑의 불가능성의 의미를 탐구하는 것이 이 연구의 목표이다. 김훈의 소설 전개에서 사랑이 지연되거나 담론화되는 양상도 주목할 만한지만, 일정한 변별적 자질로 지속적으로 출현하는 사랑의 문제는 탐구해볼 만한 가치가 있다는 것이 이 연구의 판단이다. 김훈에게 사랑의 문제는 남녀관계에서 오는 것이 아니라 존재와 비존재(非存在)의 관계, 삶과 죽음의 관계에서 오는 것이다. 죽어가는 존재에게 사랑이란 무엇인가? 이것이 사랑에 대한 첫 번째 질문이다. 이 물음은 죽어가는 존재에게 삶에 대한 욕망은 무엇인가라는 물음과 다르지 않다. 그러나 김훈의 인물들은 사랑의 가능성을 추구하기에는 너무 많은 죽음의 환경에 둘러싸여 있다. 김훈의 소설 텍스트에서 ‘사랑’이라는 기표가 매우 빈곤한 양상으로 관찰되는 것은 이 때문이다. 사랑의 문제를 소설의 중심 상황으로 배치하고 있는 「화장」은 사랑의 불가능성의 핵심 문제인 ‘차이’에 대한 사유가 본격적으로 전개되어 있는 작품이다. 이 작품에서 차이를 해소할 수 없는 남녀관계의 상대적 타자성은, 삶과 죽음 관계의 절대적 타자성의 환유로 기능한다. 김훈의 소설에서 사랑은 끝내는 불가능한 절대의 요구가 되는데, 이것이 작가 김훈이 사랑의 불가능성이라는 테마에 부여한 심오한 차원이고 품격이라고 할 수 있다. 이 절대에 대한 요구를 부르는 절대적 타자성이라는 차원만 존재하지 않는다면, 세계 내용의 향유나 연민 정도가 사랑이 될 수도 있을 터이다. 그런데 김훈의 소설은 우리에게 현재 삶의 향유의 지평 너머, 문명의 외부, 존재의 바깥에 대한 감수성을 거듭 환기시킨다. 사랑의 불가능성의 문제는 이 문제의 중심에 있다고 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to explore the meaning of love, especially the impossibility of love, in Kim Hoon’s novel. In Kim Hoon’s novel, the aspect of love discourse is noteworthy, but it is the judgment of this study that the problem of love that constantly emerges with certain discriminating qualities is worth exploring. For Kim Hoon, the problem of love does not come from the relationship between man and woman but from the relationship between existence and non-existence, and between life and death. What is love for a dying being? This is the first question about love. This question is no different from the question of the desire for life to a dying being. However, Kim Hoon’s characters are surrounded by an environment of death too much to pursue the possibility of love. This is why the sign of ‘love’ is seen as a very poor form in the text of Kim Hoon’s novel. “Cremation”, which places the problem of love as the central situation of the novel, is a work in which the reason for the “difference”, which is the core problem of the impossibility of love, is fully developed. The relative otherness of the relationship between men and women, which can not resolve the difference in this work, functions as the metonymy of the absolute otherness of the relationship between life and death. This is a profound dimension and dignity that the artist Kim Hoon gives to the theme of impossibility of love. In Kim Hoon’s novel, love becomes an impossible absolute demand to end. If there is no dimension of absolute otherness that calls for this absolute need, the jouissance of world contents could be love. But, the final destiny given to the word ‘love’ in Kim Hoon’s novel makes a crack that can not be covered by such affirmation of world contents. The absurd consciousness arises from this crack. Therefore, the debate about Kim Hoon’s novel, which considers the absurd consciousness as the chronic problem of it, should be considered in the dimension of love.
