Abstract
This study found specific cultural meanings through cognitive linguistics by identifying how the original meaning was used, identifying the unique symbolic meaning, and comparing and analyzing metaphorically expressed proverbs with proverbs based on “dogs” from the three countries. Analysis of the three countries’ proverbs revealed the following similarities and differences. First, the three countries generally thought dogs were good at following people and being smart. Second, however, Indonesia had a stronger negative side than Korea and China. This is seen as a result of religious influence. Third, there is a difference among the metaphorical expressions of dogs as human beings in the proverbs of the three countries: “Korea is a hard worker and diligent person,” China is “an outstanding talent but humble person” and “a powerful and strong person” in Indonesia. This is the result of reflecting the true image of human beings pursued by each country. Fourth, in the negative light, Korea was “low in status or status” and China was mainly “those who chased or called for authority,” while Indonesia had many “ambitious people.” This is also a result that reflects the social aspects of each country.
