Abstract

This study examines <Tokyo Story> (1953), directed by Ozu Yasujirō, as a cinematic text that reflects the socio-cultural transformation of postwar Japan. Through a cultural analysis, the research explores how the film portrays the shifting family dynamics, the tension between tradition and modernity, and the aesthetics of mono no aware as a unique form of Japanese sentiment. By situating the narrative within the historical context of Japan’s rapid modernization, the study reveals how generational conflict and emotional distance emerge as by-products of social change. Furthermore, it discusses how Ozu’s minimalist cinematography and narrative pacing evoke a contemplative viewing experience, encouraging the audience to reflect on impermanence and loss. This analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of Japanese postwar identity construction and the enduring relevance of Ozu’s aesthetic vision in modern film studies. In addition, this study examines how the dialogues and silences of the characters, as well as the arrangement of mise-en-scène, reveal the fracture between collectivist values of Japanese society and individual desires. Ozu depicts the disintegration of the family not through overt conflict but through the subtle disruptions of everyday conversations and the crossing of gazes. Through this, the audience experiences not only the narrative of a single family but also the generational discord and cultural transformations embedded in postwar Japanese society. Thus, Tokyo Story can be interpreted as a cultural text that reconstructs social memory beyond a personal narrative.
