Abstract

This study analyzed the articles and comments regarding the discharge of treated radioactive water from Fukushima in Naver and Yahoo Japan to identify keywords and compare the differences between the prominence rankings of the agendas set by news portals and the agendas evaluated by commenters. During the period from August 24, 2023 to August 30, 2023, 725 articles were collected from Naver, and 89 from Yahoo Japan while 60,265 comments from Naver and 10,677 from Yahoo Japan were secured, respectively. Frequency analysis, word cloud analysis, and LDA were used in this study. As a result of the analysis, first, according to the result of the analysis, the articles from Naver prominently showed scientific facts, information disclosure, social concerns, and political situations while the comments therefrom showed mixed feelings by reconstructing such facts and disclosure depending on political viewpoints. The articles from Yahoo Japan dealt with scientific facts and international relations while the comments therefrom expressed strong hatreds towards China and eventually emerged emotional conflicts. Second, as for the prominence ranking in the articles regarding the treated radioactive water from Fukushima in Naver, “the analysis and information disclosure of tritium concentration”, “the damage to the fishing industry due to the discharge of the treated radioactive water”, and “political propaganda vs. scientific reliability” were ranked in order. In the comments from Naver, the agenda were highlighted in order of “political conflict over seafood safety”, “the impact of the discharge of the treated radioactive water and polarized opinions regarding the issue”, and “the confrontation between the discharge of the treated radioactive water and scientific reliability”. The articles from Yahoo Japan dealt with “the discharge of treated radioactive water, Japan’s seafood exports in crisis”, “China’s harassing calls and harassment over the discharge of treated radioactive water to the sea”, and “the analysis of tritium concentration, and information disclosure” in the order while the comments therefrom prominently displayed strong anti-Chinese sentiment. This study suggests the impact of the agenda-setting method of news from portals over public emotional responses and social conflicts and provides the important implications for the future role of media and the creation of social discourse.
