《資治通鑑》과 《史記》 비교 — 記事의 增補와 축소⋅삭제를 중심으로

Abstract

ZizhiTongjian is a historical work which deals with the era from the Warring States period to the Five Dynasties period, or 1362 years from BC403 to 959. This paper compares the two texts in terms of their respective treatments of the period from the Warring States to the reign of Wudi during the Han Dynasty. SimaGuang summarized and omitted many parts of Shiji while converting it from a biographical work to a chronological narrative. In order to understand SimaGuang’s intent, reviewing the excluded stories is just as important as examining the preserved content. The editorial decisions as to what to include and exclude shed light on the historian’s intended theme and context, as well as the directions that were taken in the constitution of history. This paper examines two types of narrative that were omitted from Shiji by SimaGuang. The first type consists of absurd and bizarre content, while the second is comprised of stories of knights errant and assassins who violate Confucian order. With the omission of such unwanted content, ZizhiTongjian is a more didactic work than Shiji.
