Abstract
The Zhexi Cipai(浙西詞派) placed importance on graceful expressions and forms in the creation of Ci poetry. Over time, however, their Ci poems, especially yongwuci(詠物詞) singing about objects in the outside world, received an evaluation that they had poor “meanings” compared to their form as they moved in a direction of putting too many efforts into the description of an appearance and showing off their erudite knowledge by enumerating difficult precedents and old anecdotes. Out of this, the Changzhou Cipai(常州詞派) emerged and replaced the Zhexi Cipai, emphasizing “implications” found in Ci poems. Zhang Huiyan(張惠言), a Ciren from Changzhou, established a framework for the Changzhou Cipai in the late 18th century. Zhang Huiyan held the awareness that Ci should express the emotions that wise and noble men could not bear to express, emphasizing the “meanings” of Ci poems. This suggests that he inherited the consciousness that recognized the roles of Ci poetry as a means of expressing the “sorrow of the nobility,” which made the revival of Ci poetry possible in the Qing Dynasty. In Zhang Huiyan’s works, boundary(transitional) time becomes the main background. Here, the writer’s sensitive sense to perceive the seasonal changes early and his failure in communicating with nature that grants no human wishes generate the emotion of sorrow. In particular, Zhang Huiyan set “spring” as a time background and expressed the images of late spring in so many of his works. Late spring is a “season of contradictions” as it holds the image of “decline” for falling red flowers and the image of “life” for green grass growing thick simultaneously. This made the writer feel despair and hope at the same time. In addition, he holds self-awareness as a lonely being and chooses to become one who does not blend with others himself. This image of “solitude” is expressed with a “traveler” at the “end of the sky,” “swallow with no home,” or “flower left with only one stem.”
