Abstract
Up until the Tang period, the imagery of the peony was feminine and often negative on account of its association with Precious Consort Yang and Empress Wu, but a new symbolism appeared in Luoyang beginning from the Song dynasty. As the flower was now believed to receive the central and harmonious qi from the city, it came to represent the Central Plains, the Central Kingdom, and imperial authority. Thus, it did not cause a burden for Ouyang Xiu 歐陽修 to write about the beauty of the flower. However, new issues arose as Qian Weiyan 錢惟演 began hosting extravagant peony parties and sent exquisite peonies to the imperial court. In this context, I argue that by writing “The Record of Peonies in Luoyang”(洛陽牡丹記), Ouyang Xiu was attempting to vindicate his patron Qian Weiyan from ignominious charges. I also discuss the emergence of King Peony and its cultural and political significances in the context of early Northern Song.
