근대일본에 있어 1890년 10월 ‘교육에 관한 칙어(勅語)’ 발포 이후 교육의 역할은 90%가 넘는 취학률을 배경으로 국정교과서를 통해 학동들에게 ‘대일본제국’이라는 국가의 정체성을 부단히 각인시키고, 그 정점에 있는 천황의 군의 최고 통수권자로서의 절대적 권위와 만세일계의 황통보(皇統譜)를 담보로 신성불가침성을 강조하며 ‘국체’에 멸사(滅私)하는 충량한 ‘신민’을 키우는 것이었다. 본고는 ‘근대일본의 교육과 전쟁’이라는 커다란 주제를 설정하고 이른바 ‘교육칙어(敎育勅語)’를 중심으로 교육칙어 발포 이전과 이후의 교육 상황을 교육의 국가주의와 군국주의(軍國主義)적 성격에 초점을 맞춰 이를 조감(鳥瞰)하고, 메이지 초기 일본의 근대교육이 개인의 입신과 출세라는 지극히 사적 가치를 추구하는 한편에서 천황과 국가를 강하게 의식하는 근대 일본인들의 공적 사유체계의 형성, 다시 말해 충군애국 사상을 핵심으로 하는 국체사상의 형성이라는 분열적 사유체계의 형성과정의 고찰을 통해 메이지 후기 교육의 전쟁책임에 대해 추급해 보았다.
Abstract
The role of education in modern Japan after the promulgation of the ‘Imperial Rescript on Education’ have been to imprint the identity of the nation called ‘The Empire of Japan’ constantly on the children’s mind based on the school attendance rate of more than 90%, or through the system of government designated text books, to emphasize the absolute authority and sacrosanctity and inviolability of the emperor as the commander in chief, and to raise loyal and honest subjects to nation. This article sets a big theme of ‘Education and War in Modern Japan’ and has a bird’s eye view of the educational situation before and after the promulgation of Imperial Rescript on Education in 1890 diachronically, focusing on Nationalism Education and Militarism Education. And it pursues the war responsibility of education by considering carefully the formation process of a schismatic thinking system that is strongly conscious of the Emperor and the state meanwhile, seeks the private value of success in life and of self-independence, that is to say the public thinking system that is state system ideology laying stress on loyalty and patriotism in modern Japan.
