Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to classify the sorts of the 'between-the- paragraphs headline' and to analyse its functions. The between-the-paragraphs headline is a kind of headline of a newspaper article, which is inserted between two paragraphs. It is related to the theme of just one or two paragraphs, while general headline is related to the theme of the entire article. I analysed the Hankyoreh, a daily newspaper in Korean, which was issued from 1st February to 28th February 2006. The between-the-paragraphs headline introduces the theme of a paragraph, and emphasizes important points of the article. With these functions, the between-the-paragraphs headline helps the readers who read a long newspaper article.
